چکیده

It has been estimated that 15% of patients who have elective surgery and 30% of patients whose surgery was classed as ‘contaminated’ suffer from surgical site infections (SSIs) (Bruce et al, 2001). Patients with SSIs will have extended hospital stays, they will have a greater risk of morbidity and mortality, and treatment costs will be increased (Kirkland et al, 1999). Wound management programmes that reduce the incidence of SSIs will improve patient outcomes and reduce the cost of treatment.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa-induced infection and degradation of human wound fluid and skin proteins ex vivo are eradicated by a synthetic cationic polymer.

OBJECTIVES Antimicrobial peptides are important effectors of innate immunity. Bacteria display multiple defence mechanisms against these peptides. For example, Pseudomonas aeruginosa releases potent proteinases that inactivate the human cathelicidin LL-37. Hence, in conditions characterized by persistent bacterial colonization, such as in P. aeruginosa-infected skin wounds, there is a need for ...

Reduction of bacterial burden and pain in chronic wounds using a new polyhexamethylene biguanide antimicrobial foam dressing-clinical trial results.

OBJECTIVE A randomized controlled trial to evaluate the effectiveness of a polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB) foam dressing compared with a similar non-antimicrobial foam for the treatment of superficial bacterial burden, wound-associated pain, and reduction in wound size. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS This study was conducted in 2 wound healing clinics-a university hospital-based clinic and a com...

Efficacy of Polyhexamethylene Biguanide-containing Antimicrobial Foam Dressing Against MRSA Relative to Standard Foam Dressing.

Many modern foam wound dressings possess a variety of attributes that are designed to create a supportive wound-healing environment. These attributes include absorbing exudate, providing optimum moisture balance at the wound surface, and preventing maceration of surrounding tissue. However, studies suggest that controlling wound bioburden should also be targeted when developing wound ther...

Effectiveness of a New Antimicrobial Gauze Dressing as a Bacterial Barrier

BACKGROUND: Gauze dressing continues to be the most commonly used wound dressing. However, because of its porous structure it is not a barrier to bacterial penetration. Binding an antimicrobial agent to the gauze fibers may prevent bacterial migration through the gauze and thus allow gauze to become a bacterial barrier. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of gauze treate...

A systematic comparison of antimicrobial wound dressings using a planktonic cell and an immobilized cell model.

AIM The aim of the study was to evaluate the ability of in vitro planktonic and immobilized cell models for determining the antimicrobial efficacy of common antimicrobial wound dressings. METHODS AND RESULTS Five strains of Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus were tested against four antimicrobial wound dressings containing silver, h...
